The royal wedding on April 29, 2011 at London's Westminster Abbey will attract international public attention as Kate and Wills tie the knot.

A Special Day

When Prince Charles married Lady Diana in St Paul's Cathedral on July 29 1981, most of Great Britain had the day off and many flocked to London to line the streets. The worldwide television and radio audience was estimated to have been a record 1000 million.

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is expected to draw no less an audience on April 29 2011 and promises to be the most auspicious royal event in 30 years.

Royal Wedding Plans

The arrangement of the royal wedding is the responsibility of the Lord Chamberlain, while the marriage will be solemnised by the Archbishop of Canterbury at the service, which will begin at 11am. A carriage procession consisting of up three coaches will carry the royal couple and members of the Royal family back to Buckingham palace, with escorts of varying sizes formed by the Household Cavalry and guards of honour mounted at both ends and the route lined by members of Her Majesty's Armed Forces.

Traditionally the royal bridegroom does not have a best man. As a member of the Royal Family he has a 'supporter'. In previous royal weddings Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, appointed his brother Prince Edward as his supporter on his marriage to Lady Sarah Ferguson. Prince Andrew acted as supporter to Prince Charles on his marriage Lady Diana. Prince William, however, has decided to call his brother, Prince Harry, 'best man' rather than the traditional 'supporter' in the forthcoming royal wedding.

The bride's maid of honour will be her younger sister, Pippa. The role of bridesmaids will be performed by Lady Louise Windsor, seven, eight-year old Princess Margarita Armstrong-Jones, and Eliza Lopes and Grace van Cutsem, both three. Once the ceremony is complete, Kate Middleton's official title will be Princess William of Wales, taking her husband's name as she will be a Princess by marriage rather than by birth. However, she will most likely be referred to as Princess Catherine informally.

In earlier centuries it was customary for royal weddings to be celebrated late in the day and with greater pomp and ceremony than is the case today. Since Queen Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1839 the time has shifted to the morning and the royal wedding service will now be followed by a wedding breakfast (at lunchtime) at Buckingham Palace. The royal newlyweds will then appear on the balcony of the Palace to be greeted by the crowds gathered below around the Victoria Memorial.

After the Wedding

No plans have yet been announced for the royal honeymoon. However, Prince Williams's father, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and Her Majesty The Queen spent part of their respective honeymoons at Broadlands in Hampshire, the former home of Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Other likely places are Kenya, where Prince William proposed to Miss Middleton, Australia or even the Scilly Isles off the Cornish coast.

What can be confirmed, however, is that the royal couple's first official overseas engagement together will be a tour of Canada.

Whatever the Prince William and Princess Catherine decide, the royal wedding is sure to be one of happiness and celebration for the United Kingdom, the British Commonwealth and the rest of the world.
